Mapping Community Issues - Easier and Cheaper

Registration
Substance abuse, prevention, and treatment professionals, law enforcement, and community coalition volunteers who want to develop complex maps and visual products using free tools that help in organizational decision making and visually depicting community issues.

Requirements
Computer. Students will be required to attend with a non-government computer, so they can download QGIS.

QGIS 3.62.2. Students will need to download “QGIS Standalone Installer Version 3.26” from www.qgis.org/en/site/forusers/download.html

Course Description
This two-day course will teach individuals working in their communities how to use free tools to help with organizational decision making and informing the community about local issues. There are many tools available on the internet, many of which are easy to use. This course will direct you to these tools and give step by step instructions to develop quality maps and visual products. By the end of day 2, every student will have completed an infographic and be capable of developing quality products for their organization.

This course will also provide an overview of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the common software related to GIS, and how to use resources available to community groups. Students will learn how to use different types of data to visually answer questions regarding problems in their community. Ina addition to learning how to answer questions regarding problem in their community, students will learn about Hot-Spot Policing and Drug Market Intervention, which are proven effective in reducing all types of crime, not just drug related crime, and recidivism.

Mapping Community Issues and Crime is a two-day (16 hour) course
