The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), in collaboration with Midwest Counterdrug Training Center (MCTC), is offering Prevention Ethics for Certification. The training was created by the Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (CAPT) through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
Prevention Ethics Training is a course of study in ethics in substance abuse prevention. This training is primarily for entry-level and experienced prevention practitioners working in communities, but it is also appropriate for professionals working in related fields.
What does the Prevention Ethics for Certification training cover?
This training offers substance use prevention professionals—both experienced and new to the field—an opportunity to explore the role of ethics in their work. Training content focuses on the Prevention Think Tank’s Prevention Code of Ethics’ six principles. This interactive training provides education on ethical responsibilities and practices, including the use of a formalized ethical decision-making process. As a result of this course, participants will be able to:
Understand ethics in relation to substance abuse prevention
Identify the six principles of the Prevention Code of Ethics
Apply the four-step Ethical Decision Making Process
Are continuing education hours available?
Participants completing the Prevention Ethics training will receive a certificate for six hours of training. Certificates can be submitted to credentialing authority toward certification or recertification. This training meets the Ethics training requirement for Prevention Specialist Certification through the Iowa Board of Certification

Is free lodging available?
If the course is offered in person, free lodging is only available if noted within the registration process.
How often is the Prevention Ethics for Certification course offered in Iowa?
This course is offered two to three times per year. Additional trainings may be added to the yearly schedule depending on training need. The course dates are set 3-6 months before the training occurs and once confirmed, are posted on the MCTC website.
